Your thoughts one this kind of stuff make me happy and it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who got the majority of my sex education from smut fanfiction. I don’t think that was the best thing, but it was better than the other…
Oh, god, I remember that shit too, heck, I had one! It was a blessing whenever you could find a site list somewhere. But … there was so much awful stuff back then. And there was no in-depth tagging systems back then, just a rating system.
I remember the first fanfiction that I read where I was aware* that a rape had occurred, mostly because it had been said in the narration. I remember how confused and hurt that I felt for Kagome in the fic. And also a little weirded out that it was never mentioned again. Shouldn’t it have been brought up? Why didn’t Inu-Yasha (who, in the fic, had heard the rape occuring) tell the others in the group what was going on?
*Considering this was ‘03 and I’m 99% sure that I was milling around in my first fandom (which happened to be Yu-Gi-Oh!) I’m sure that I read quite a bit of fic that would, by today’s standards, be considered rape fic, even though it was not presented that way.
I sometimes worry about how much reading that kind of fiction (some of which was written by actual adults) really messed with my 11-12 year old head. Not to mention all of the stuff that I would read later.
Which is why when I discovered A03 and noticed their tagging system I was so impressed and why I try to donate to the project as much as possible. So that no other little 11-12-13+ year old with too much internet would internalize the things that I had read and think that it was normal.
